Risk of Ruin Calculator
Estimate how likely your account is to fall by a chosen amount, and how risk per trade changes it.
Estimate My Risk of RuinRisk of ruin is the probability that a series of losses takes an account down to a level you cannot or will not recover from. Most traders know the idea but never put a number on it, which is a pity, because the number depends heavily on one thing they control: how much they risk on each trade.
The calculator estimates it by simulation. It plays out thousands of sequences of trades using your win rate, your reward for each unit of risk, the share of the balance you risk per trade, and the number of trades, and counts how many of those sequences fall by your chosen ruin level at some point. The same inputs always give the same answer, so you can change one number at a time and see its effect.
The result is usually striking. With the same strategy, doubling the risk per trade can multiply the chance of a deep drawdown many times over, while a modest reduction can bring it close to zero. A strategy with a real edge can still be unsafe at a size that is too large for it. That is the reason professional traders talk about sizing before they talk about entries.
It is an estimate under simple assumptions, namely that every trade is independent and has the same odds. Real markets are less tidy, so treat the result as a way to compare choices, not a forecast. Use the position size calculator to set size from the risk percentage you choose.

4,000
A simulation of 4000 random sequences using your numbers, assuming every trade is independent and risks the same share of the balance. It is an estimate, not a forecast of your results.
A calculator uses numbers you type in. To see what your own trades actually show, upload your trade history.

Simulated sequences
Thousands of random sequences of wins and losses, each trade risking your chosen share of the current balance, using a fixed seed so results are repeatable.
What counts as ruin
The account falling from its starting balance by the percentage you choose, at any point within your number of trades.
Reward and win rate
A win earns your reward multiple of the amount risked, and a loss costs it. A 45% win rate at 1.5 reward is a strategy with a small edge.
The lever you control
Risk per trade. Change it and watch the chance move. A larger drawdown also takes longer to recover from, as the drawdown recovery calculator shows.
Frequently asked questions
What is a safe risk of ruin?
There is no single answer. It depends on how large a loss you can accept and how many trades you intend to make. Most traders aim for it to be very small for the drawdown they cannot tolerate, and the calculator lets you see which risk per trade achieves that.
Why does the answer change with the number of trades?
Because the longer you trade, the more chances a bad run has to occur. Even a small chance per period adds up over many trades, so a risk that looks acceptable over 50 trades may not be over 500.
Is the simulation a prediction?
No. It shows what would happen if your win rate and reward held and trades were independent. Your actual figures may differ, and markets change. Use it to compare sizing choices, not to forecast your account.
How accurate is it?
It is an estimate from a finite number of simulated sequences, so small differences between two results can be noise. Large differences, such as the effect of doubling risk per trade, are real.
