Losing Streak Probability Calculator

See how likely a losing streak is at your win rate, and how often it should be expected.

Calculate Streak Odds

When a losing streak arrives, it feels like proof that something has broken. Often nothing has. Even a strategy that works will string together losses now and then, and the calculator shows how often that should happen at your win rate, so you can tell the difference between bad luck and a real change.

There are two questions to ask. The first is the chance that the next several trades all lose, which is simply the loss rate multiplied by itself that many times. The second is the chance that, somewhere in a stretch of trades, you will see a run of that length at least once. The second is far larger than people expect, because there are many places in a long stretch where a run could begin.

At a 50% win rate, six losses in a row has a probability of about 1.6% for any particular six trades, but over a hundred trades the chance of seeing a run of six somewhere is a little over one in two. Streaks are not an anomaly of a long enough record; they are a feature of it.

This matters for how you respond. Knowing that a streak of a given length is normal for your win rate lets you stay with a plan that is still working. Knowing that your streak is far beyond what chance would produce is a reason to review it. To see what you actually do during streaks, use the losing streak analyzer.

Chance of at least one 6-loss streak in 100 trades

Assumes each trade is independent with the same win rate. Real trading is messier, but this shows how often streaks happen by chance alone.

A calculator uses numbers you type in. To see what your own trades actually show, upload your trade history.

Analyze my trades

How it is calculated

The next trades all lose

The loss rate raised to the power of the streak length. At a 50% win rate, the next three trades all losing has a chance of 12.5%.

At least one streak in a stretch

Calculated exactly by stepping through every trade and tracking the length of the current losing run, not estimated.

Independent trades

The calculation treats each trade as separate with the same win rate. Real trades can be linked, for example by market conditions, so treat the result as a guide.

Using it

Compare the longest losing streak in your history with what chance alone would give for your win rate and number of trades. The trading performance analyzer reports your longest streak.

Frequently asked questions

How long a losing streak is normal?

It depends on your win rate and how many trades you take. The lower your win rate and the more trades you place, the longer the longest streak you should expect. Enter your own numbers to see the chance for any length.

Does a losing streak mean my strategy has stopped working?

Not necessarily. A streak of normal length is expected at your win rate. A streak much longer than chance would suggest, or one that comes with a clear change in the market or in how you trade, is a reason to look more closely.

Are my trades really independent?

Often not entirely. Trades taken in the same market conditions can win and lose together, which makes streaks more likely than the independent calculation. Treat the numbers as a baseline, and expect real streaks to be a little longer.

What should I do during a losing streak?

That is for your own plan to say. The analyzer shows whether you tend to change size or speed up after losses, which is the part of a streak you control. A pre-agreed rule written before the streak starts is easier to follow than one made during it.
