Break-Even Win Rate Calculator
Find the win rate your average win and average loss require.
Calculate My Break-Even RateYour win rate on its own tells you very little. A trader who wins 70% of trades can lose money, and one who wins 35% can make it, depending on how big the wins are compared with the losses. The number that matters is the win rate relative to the sizes.
The break-even win rate is the share of trades you must win for your wins and losses to cancel out. It is your average loss divided by the sum of your average win and your average loss. If your average win is 30 and your average loss is 45, you need to win 60% of your trades just to break even.
Compare that with your actual win rate. If you win more often than the break-even rate, you are making money before costs. If less, the gap is what is costing you, and there are two ways to close it: win more often, or make the average loss smaller compared with the average win.
Enter your own average win and loss below. If you are not sure of them, the trading performance analyzer calculates both from your trade history, and why your losses may be bigger than your wins explains what usually drives the gap.

The formula
Break-even win rate = average loss ÷ (average win + average loss).
Loss-to-win ratio
Your average loss divided by your average win. The larger it is, the higher the win rate you need.
Average result per trade
Your win rate times your average win, minus your loss rate times your average loss. Positive means profitable before costs.
Before costs
Fees, funding and slippage are not included unless you build them into the averages you enter. For a trade-level version, see the risk reward ratio calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good win rate in trading?
There is no good win rate in isolation. A win rate is only good relative to the size of your average win and loss, which is what this calculator compares. Many profitable approaches win less than half the time and rely on large wins.
Should I include fees in my averages?
For a more realistic number, enter your average win and loss after fees. The calculator treats the figures exactly as you enter them, so whatever costs you build in are reflected in the result.
How do I find my average win and average loss?
Add up your winning trades and divide by how many there are, then do the same for your losing trades. Or upload your history to the trading performance analyzer, which calculates both from your file in one step.
